Best Bakuteh & Martini in KL?

So.. where is the best Bakuteh in KL?

DSC01395
PUDU!

We personally have the highest regard for BKT Yik See Ho. This place is situated in the vicinity of the Pudu Wet Market and is a hot favourite amongst KL-lites. Some may beg to differ or have their own favourites but for now, C&C bring their visitors, here. Our friends were staying at the Nikko hotel which made this place a convenient stop for dinner before the night's party session began.

Where else can you see the butchers hacking away at the pig carcass (corner alleyway), in preparation for tomorrows rations, from where you sit and eat along the 5 foot way.

Grim? Gross? Well, this is BKT, Pudu style!

Not only that, all the critters of the night come out to play as well, as you sit and eat.
Thank God our friends are not squeamish, because that's a huge blur of a rat you see there, on the bottom right corner of this collage.

Lovely!

The food was great. Being streetwise and all, we decided against the claypot (Why pay a premium for the same stuff in bowls - complete bollocks that it taste better in the claypot.. pfft..)

Once again the intestine, stomach, wobbly-trotters and the soft bone were big hits. The soup was thick, meaty yet herbal, in the right proportions.

after dinner... drinks.

"Satu Lagi", "Stubborn Blonde", "Burning Desire", "Perfect Manhattan".. are not nicknames for people.. they are names of some of the greatest cocktails in KL ...

which begs the question - where can you find the dirtiest martini in town...

The dirtiest, meanest.. most yummiest martinis ALL night long, courtesy of the super slick bartender Ash!

If you haven't already guessed it, that's my favourite martini. The dirty martini.
(Gives you a dirty buzz that lasts till.. erm, the next martini.)

The best of both worlds

DSC09324
If i said that this is Bak Kut Teh... you probably wouldn't believe me,

.
.
.

But seriously folks, this is where the good people of Klang...(as well as PJ/KL) come to sample the famous DRY Bakuteh.

DSC09288 DSC09296
The name of this place is Lai Choon Bakuteh. It is situated in Meru, Klang, just behind Klang Parade.

DSC09298
The owner Mr. Cheong, cooks a mean Bakuteh. He hardly has time to look up and smile for the picture.. but no worries... We knew he was concentrating on making our meal!

DSC09300
His missus.. with the KILLER special secret sauce for the BKT. What a cool contraption - milk bottle with a hole in the cap to dispense the black sauce. Ingenious:D

"For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble! "
-W. Shakespeare, Macbeth

We could tell that we were in for a feast. I ordered the normal BKT, so that we could see what the soup tasted like as well. The best of both worlds, really.

Because we got there late, i.e. 2pm, all the Pun Fei Sau(half fat, half lean meat) Pai Kuat(Bone), Cheong(intestine), Tow(stomach) were gone!
Wot?! No intestine... no fatty meat... groan.. what bad luck.

Wait a minute, Mr Cheong yells.. he reaches into the depths of the caldron and yanks out one last, lonesome, hunk of meat hanging on soft bone. Thank God! There is hope yet for a good meal:D

What a Champion.

Anyways, we sound found out that the Wet BKT, taste extremely meaty and sweet. Less herbal, so if you are the sort who likes your BKT herbally, then this would be just so-so for you. However, the soup was very sweet and pungent so I would rate it as above average. It gets a 6/10.

The Dry BKT was gorgeous. I have never tried this sort of concoction before and found it really addictive! The strange taste that hits you first when you bite into the black meat, is the Ham Yee(dry salted fish) and then followed by the burn, from the Chili Padi (Small green chili). Very unusual and very, very good. It gets a 7/10.

So, the cost for the claypot BKT, both dry and wet, are RM9 each. If you ask for the wet BKT in just a bowl (no claypot) then it is RM7. Not any cheaper than KL standards, right, though people keep saying it's cheaper to eat in Klang. But this is no wonder as raw materials are just sky-rocketing in prices and the owners are having a hard time keeping their prices reasonable. Apparently Pork has gone up in price, 4 times in the last 4 months. So, a raise from the RM8 per bowl, to RM9 is actually considered being KIND to its patrons!

Because we over-eat (as usual), we decided to go check out the biscuit shop next door that is Sin Hup Heng food trading co.
DSC09290
What are they making??

DSC09293
Every body is hard at work... Why do they need so many staff?

DSC09329
Oh... then it dawned on me..

The ladies are mass producing the Moon cake!

What a cool process... from kneading the dough to rolling them into balls, to the final product...
DSC09332
VIOLA! Cute huh?

DSC09334
Here is the starting material all spread out over the tables.
.
.

After buying our mooncakes, we were still full.. so we decided to walk some more and to check out Klang Parade.

DSC09338
Wow... this place is really cool. We just realised that we haven't been to Klang Parade... like, ever!

Looking at the neon, we knew that Klang people know how to shop and have a good time;D

DSC09345
Even the sales girls in the boutiques looked like they were ready to hit the party, immediately after work... Short skirts and stilettos were the average uniform here.

DSC09341

2 hours later, the food had settled and the man said.. let's go. I had shopped Klang Parade dry (? teehee) and eaten my fill. And so I was happy.

We left, but one day we will be back to explore the other hidden gems in Klang, for sure:D

Skytrex !

Oh.. this looks so EASY...

Or so, he makes it seem...

our instructor was so agile... we thought.. to ourselves...

No Sweat!... 'piece-of-cake'...
.
.
.
.
.

Then... we saw the actual HEIGHT !!!

Arrrgh... ! not funny. Thank God i was designated photographer.. coz i am way scared of heights.. and that's putting it mildly... try cold sweat, seeing black spots.. then white... then blacking out :P

Anyway, here are some shots of the amazing feats my friends accomplished...

They'd put Cirque du Soleil to shame, i tell ya... :D

.
.
Phew.. made it! All in all, the course took 2 hours.. but apparently it felt longer... and man were we famished at the end of it..
.
.

We were soooooo hungry, and it was late by the time we finished, so we didn't make it to Klang town for the 'hardcore bakuteh'. Instead, one of our friends who was familiar with Klang recommended Teck Huat to save time and to get our stomachs filled QUICK.

Hmmm.. you've never seen a group demolish their food faster i tell ya!

So verdict? I don't know if we were really hungry, but the food tasted pretty all right.
However, this bakuteh is not the herbally sort, so if you like you BKT tasting stronger and infused in Chinese herbs, then, this is not the BKT for you.

Whatever it was, we left feeling full and happy with the day's work.. !

of teapots, teacups and thingamabobs...

BATU 30 Bakuteh! Music to my ears.. and manna to my stomach! lol.

The general direction : Coming from Rawang... you will hit Batu 30 (en route Batang Kali)

When you catch sight of this "Bengkel Mengecat Wong Fatt".... go SLOW...

A-hah! There it is ... i see it!

P3290054
The thing that strikes me most about this place is that though it looks so rural and 'village-y' and all, but there is nothing backward or rural about their hygiene whatsoever! I mean, just look at the industrial sized pot they use for boiling water... they wash everything.. and I mean EVERYTHING with this boiling water. No bowl, chopstick, saucer or germ (eek!) is spared! Impressive huh?

The owner is a real character... when he is not hacking up the "BAK" (in bakuteh), he collects dainty lil teapots and teacups..

It's his hobby.

Wow. That kills me. (it's kinda like the butcher who collects stamps.. you know?!... how cute is dat;P)

Anyway, the gist of it is, apart fm teapots, teacups and thingamabobs... the guy cooks a truly mean bakuteh... ("so say all of us.. so say all of us...!" dum dee dum...)

I love the bakuteh, i do.

But what i CRAVE and just DIE for, is the "cheong" (intestine). Yup, feed me pig intestine soup and then send me packing.. that's all i want when i am here... and that's all i'll miss when i am gone!

Bakuteh:7/10
Pig intestine pepper 'blow-your-mind' soup :8/10 ( i like!!!)
Service: very very good... he (the chef) cooks and serves and chats and all...
Price: low.. oh so low... ;D
