Transformers II and Nasi Lemak San Peng

Transformers II The Revenge of the Fallen - Action Packed, a little Cheesy & Sappy in parts. Who cares? It offered up, great, mindless entertainment all the way! We had fun:)

After the movie, on to San Peng for some nasi lemak. This nasi lemak use to be packed back in the days of yore, but today, even at approximately 9.45pm, it was easy to get a table. The crowd that use to flock to queue for this famous fatty coconut rice had been reduced to half the number of ardent fans, sad to say.


Well, bad for the vendors, good for us, as we did not have too long a wait in front of us. The aunty looked a little sour, so I had to put my point and shoot on stealth mode (i.e. hidden behind the back of the person queuing in front of me)

As this is Chinese nasi lemak, there is no shortage of lard. Pork sausages, Pork Luncheon Meat, Pork this, Pork that.. I filled my plate so high and so fast you could hardly see my Nasi Lemak straining under the weight of the sauces and the meats I had greedily picked for myself.

The other thing I like best about this nasi lemak is, it allows you to be as creative as you want. It neither hampers nor dampens your initial instinct to be a glutton and as I reach for the kidney, the curry chicken the extra cuttle fish, the massive dollop of steaming sambal - i feel like an artiste let loose to 'paint her plate RED' .

Oh joy!

RM27.00 for the 3 plates you see above which means approximately RM9.00 per plate. Not the cheapest of streetside nasi lemaks but when one looks at the amount of 'stuff' atop the rice, one can hardly complain right?

Cumi decided to go for the good ole fashioned charsiew wantan noodles because he finds the Nasi Lemak San Peng only just so-so. For RM3.50 his plate of 'orange' charsiew and noodles was substantial and in the words of the man himself, "pretty damn good and cheap".

He also ordered the burger from a stall nearby and this was good too. However, priced at RM2.30 it was rather small for its size. The flavour of the patty was good and the sauces and egg a perfect complement to the burger.

All in all a really fun night.

Tomorrow , the final run before the KL Marathon.. Woo-hoo! All systems GO.

2 Launches and a Lunch!

What a hectic week. Work, travel, training for the KL marathon, meeting friends... and oh, 2 launch parties in the same week and an invitation to lunch!

Both launches were executed perfectly and we were happy to be a part of it!

Finally, a huge Thank you to our lovely host Ms C! She was generous enough to open her gorgeous home to us for a home-cooked nasi lemak chow-down!
We made new friends too (well I did anyways).. in the form of WMW and PEA.


And home-cooked nasi lemak would not be complete without home-made cake!

What a fantastic week.. I cannot wait for the next!

Nasi Lemak Ong, Alor Star.

I was recently up north for work , around the time Cumi was invited for that smashing Balvenie whisky tasting session at Carcosa. I was gutted, to say the least.

No scotch in sight, rather scorched under the hot noon day Alor Star sun.. no justice... no justice I tell ya.

Anyway, I may not have been able to drown my sorrows in Whisky, but I sure managed to pig out on Uncle Ong's nasi lemak!

The stall itself, is bright and a walking advertisement. How can a foodie resist eating here.
I was beside myself with anticipation as my colleague parked the car.

Hurry up. Ciki needs feeding.

There's uncle Ong. He's set against a backdrop of celebrity photos of basically, .. uh, celebrities eating his food. (What else..)

Just looking at the set up, one thing comes to mind. Uncle Ong's nasi lemak is really Nasi Kandar with a twist!

The selection of food is laid out before the hungry eater in all its glorious, greasy splendor. The nasi lemak junkie then asks uncle ong (nicely) for this, this and that (hungry finger moves in pointing jerking motion).

So many side dishes to pick from, apart form the customary sambal and fried ikan bilis and peanuts, what more can you ask for in a nasi lemak?

One other interesting thing to note, you have a choice of rice, with uncle ong.

White or yellow.

I chose yellow because I like being different and found it to be just greasy rice. (similar to garlic rice but less aromatic)

So, verdict? Whilst the side dishes ranging from squid to fried gizzards to curry chicken/mutton.. etc was fantastic, the rice was a real let down.

No santan. How can?!
Well, if they didn't call it nasi lemak, I would not be as peeved as I was. How can you call it nasi lemak and omit the lemak? That's like having s** and not... (ok, nevermind.. got young readers whom I do not want to horrify).

But anyway, horrific lemak-less nasi lemak. Apparently Alor Star nasi lemak is like that. Go figure.

Burp. Next time just say you are taking me for Chinese nasi kandar - that would be the right term for this meal, me thinks!
