Going Garmin to Shark-infested Area

We have a new toy. The Garmin GPS 76Csx!
Cumi: ...to find all those hard-to-find/reach restaurants that only salesmen, plantation managers, contruction supervisors, nature-enthusiasts know..

We decide to key in the coordinates and see if it actually leads us where we want to go...

(this is the route we took.. can you tell where we are headed/what we will have for lunch?)

DSC03183 DSC03185
Exit here. You will also see a mosque on the way to your destination.

Where am I headed?

DSC03186
You will see the town on your right.

Have you guessed already?

DSC03189
You will see this UMNO building (OK, now you can just read the town name off the sign .. :P)

So what am I going to have for lunch?

DSC03194
Now the GPS indicates that "you are on the wrong side of the road". Kindly U turn.

Last chance to guess what's for lunch...

DSC03191

Hah! There it is. A lonesome TWO lots of shop and Soon Leong is our lunch destination.
Its specialty ?

SHARK Meat!
Cumi: Now before you, jump up and down ranting about poor sharks having their fins cut and tossed back into the sea for a slow death, we want to stress this is shark meat... to be exact a whole juvenile shark. For the record... we don't condone the cruel shark fins trade where the prized cuts doesn't bring any nutritional value to the table.
Shark meat on the other hand, is sold and eaten in many restaurants around the world.
I miss Cajun Shark Burgers in Louisiana!
DSC03217
The other dishes that are good here and come highly recommended are the Em-Far-Lam(Part of the Pig that is mixed fat and lean meat - Ze Pork Belly!) in a dark sweet sauce with heaps of garlic.
DSC03233
Lai Liu Har (Mantis Prawn) in Thai sweet and sour sauce with HEAPS of onions.

Actually the Cook at Soon Leong is really crazy about garlic and onions. Every single dish is swimming in it.

Anyway back to the juvenile shark dish. It was damn good, I tell ya.

DSC03242 DSC03243
The amazing thing about eating the meat is that, unlike bony fish, sharks have no bones. Their skeleton is made of cartilage which is a tough, fibrous substance, not nearly as hard as bone. Sharks also have no swim bladder (unlike bony fish). What you see is just a center vertebrae running through the fish. This makes the juvenile sharks really easy to eat!

DSC03231
You will find the meat compact, heavy and sweet. It is easy to imagine that shark meat(adult) would be too tough for consumption. As it is, the meat of the young shark is ideal for the table.

All in all, the food here is really good .. and cheap too. Just RM7 per fish. Eventhough it looks tiny, don't let the size fool you. The meat is compact and really delicious. We highly recommend this place.. if you can find it or bother to endure the distance here.
DSC03246
Oh, I almost forgot.. a complimentary plate of sliced pineapple!
Food Disciples, Find your GOOD LUCK HERE!
Cumi: Check out this Geomantic Compass/Pak Kua/Pak Kwa/Bagua clock...Good Feng Shui here all the time? You could be eating at the right place, the right time and hopefully in the right company but definitely with the right wallet! We ate here exactly at one pm and our food was good!
Ok, the martials man wasn't at the restaurant but i found it while googling 'Pak Kua'. Adds the right 'chi' effect!! Hmm.. now how do i add that electric zapping animation on the pics???
For 'borrowing' his images, i will add the link here

QUICK GARMIN 76CSX Review
-Made by and for engineer-types. Complicated to use unless you are regular GPS user.
-Buttons are stiff and multi-direction button is clumsy. I doubt it gets softer with time.
-Screen is transflective and resolution was so-so. Could be brighter. Wish it was touch screen!!! (So much more user friendly)
-No voice commands but having it as an option would be handy for city driving.
-Water resistant but not shockproof or scratch resistant (found out the hard way)
-Handheld. Bulky
-Best for Marine use. I bought it for the water resistance.
-USB port better to have been located at the top instead of rear. Aims to persuade you to purchase a car mounting unit.
-Unable to comment to on signal reception strength since we don't have another unit to compare. Other online reviews generally says strong signal.

Basic pointers to buy GPS
-Buy within your budget - most important is compatibility of maps and signal strength. You don't need the latest GPS if you are just a regular user. Bundled maps are great to start with.
-Buy with the knowledge that parts & service are available in your state/country
-MP3 option will sap up the battery life (not just the duration) and takes up more processing power. Of course, this can be solved with direct current from the car.
-GPS phones are handy and useful for light users. Best to get to a dedicated unit.
-If buying for the vehicle mounting, best to have a bigger screen and decent speakers.

Some other interesting sights in Kapar town

DSC03265
A Malay Chicken Rice restaurant.. looks normal enough...

DSC03267
But if you look closer, you will see that they use old office furniture as tables and chairs.. How cool is that! I just love how incongruous it looks against the normal restaurant furniture ;)
CUMI: Secretary! Please hold all my calls... i've got a meeting with nasi lemak, ayam masak merah, kerabu.....

DSC03256
Mind your English!

DSC03258
With what limited Chinese I know, that says RM1.90 for Chicken rice, right ? :P

DSC03259
Harmony - The Old and the New.

DSC03277
Discord - Arguing neighbours.. Small town business tension and strife.

DSC03272
Cacophony - The sound of laughter and banter from the coffee shop downstairs mingle with the clatter of Mahjong cards from the Kelab Kapar upstairs.

DSC03184
Time to go home! Took us forever with the federal highway route... roadworks in Klang Town is horrendous!

Ribb-it... Ribb-it...

DSC00019

A frog telephoned the Psychic Hotline and was told, "You are going to
meet a beautiful young woman who will want to know everything about
you." The frog said, "That's great! Will I meet her at a party, or
what?" "No," said the psychic, "Next term, in her biology class.
"

TeeHeehee :D

DSC00018
In this case... you will meet her - at Klang Palace Restaurant, over Dimsum!
(Oh.. how cruel.. what to do... I am Chinese - I eat almost everything with its back to the sun):P

centrobuilding
We read about this place via Julian Si's blog.
Since we were going to be in Klang that fine afternoon, we decided to swing by and check out the Dimsum at Klang Palace, Centro Mall.

DSC00029DSC00022
DSC00023DSC00028

We were early, so the place was relatively empty and service was fast.
Jules was right. Some of the dimsum was fair.. but some of it was EXCELLENT!

DSC00032
The Loh Mai Kai was really delicious. Not too wet/overly greasy like some places do it - the rice is sticky(but not drenched) and succulent with flavour. They were generous with their Lio (ingredients) too, which was nice.
DSC00024
This was my favourite of the day. The Pei Tan Sau Yoke Chok! (Century egg with pork strips porridge). The porridge is thick and sweet(I hate runny, thin porridge, unless it is meant to be runny and thin like the Teow Chew Moi/Chok) and again bursting with Lio (ingredients).
The crispy Yau Char Kwai on top really is the icing on the cake. Every mouthful was "Century egg/YauCharKwai/Pork Meat/Spring Onion" rapture! Very, Very good.

Total Bill - RM57.40 for 2 persons

FIVE in ONE

Where can you eat Steam fish and/or Assam fish for just RM17-18 per dish.. with excellent flavour and freshness?

If you see this building, you are on the right track!

Warmer, warmer....

HOT!

Very HOT! You found it... !
Hou Moon, Klang.

The Steamed Sek Pan(Garoupa fish).. huge, succulent and oozy with juices... the ginger stings, with a slight bitter edge, telling you that it's really young and fresh. Good for people with WIND problems!

The Assam Garoupa(same fish but fillet style) is so tangy it sometimes makes my hair stand. It's sour enough to make your enamels shiver, yet sweet and juicy enough to cover the sensation.
I love drinking the assam sauce;P

Don't forget to also try this - spinach in soup with herbs, as the sotong they use for flavouring is amazing. Flame grilled first to bring out the flavour - the strips of sotong in the spinach are chewy and delicious.

this... (garlic fried siew yoke)

AND this... (marmite squid)

the squid is puny, crunchy and really tasty.. like the Japanese sort..

And finally the 4 in 1 (4 juices in one),
or...

if that isn't enough, the 5 in 1 !!! (watermelon, pineapple, orange, apple and lime)

To finish it off.. order the saccharin sweet honey pineapple, and say "What a good girl am I";)

Price:RM20 per head.. cheap & good!
Food:7/10
Salt levels: low
MSG levels: moderate
Service: fast during non peak, but still relatively fast during peak lunch hour time

The best of both worlds

DSC09324
If i said that this is Bak Kut Teh... you probably wouldn't believe me,

.
.
.

But seriously folks, this is where the good people of Klang...(as well as PJ/KL) come to sample the famous DRY Bakuteh.

DSC09288 DSC09296
The name of this place is Lai Choon Bakuteh. It is situated in Meru, Klang, just behind Klang Parade.

DSC09298
The owner Mr. Cheong, cooks a mean Bakuteh. He hardly has time to look up and smile for the picture.. but no worries... We knew he was concentrating on making our meal!

DSC09300
His missus.. with the KILLER special secret sauce for the BKT. What a cool contraption - milk bottle with a hole in the cap to dispense the black sauce. Ingenious:D

DSC09313
"For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble. Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble! "
-W. Shakespeare, Macbeth

DSC09312
We could tell that we were in for a feast. I ordered the normal BKT, so that we could see what the soup tasted like as well. The best of both worlds, really.

Because we got there late, i.e. 2pm, all the Pun Fei Sau(half fat, half lean meat) Pai Kuat(Bone), Cheong(intestine), Tow(stomach) were gone!
Wot?! No intestine... no fatty meat... groan.. what bad luck.

Wait a minute, Mr Cheong yells.. he reaches into the depths of the caldron and yanks out one last, lonesome, hunk of meat hanging on soft bone. Thank God! There is hope yet for a good meal:D

What a Champion.

DSC09317

Anyways, we sound found out that the Wet BKT, taste extremely meaty and sweet. Less herbal, so if you are the sort who likes your BKT herbally, then this would be just so-so for you. However, the soup was very sweet and pungent so I would rate it as above average. It gets a 6/10.

The Dry BKT was gorgeous. I have never tried this sort of concoction before and found it really addictive! The strange taste that hits you first when you bite into the black meat, is the Ham Yee(dry salted fish) and then followed by the burn, from the Chili Padi (Small green chili). Very unusual and very, very good. It gets a 7/10.

So, the cost for the claypot BKT, both dry and wet, are RM9 each. If you ask for the wet BKT in just a bowl (no claypot) then it is RM7. Not any cheaper than KL standards, right, though people keep saying it's cheaper to eat in Klang. But this is no wonder as raw materials are just sky-rocketing in prices and the owners are having a hard time keeping their prices reasonable. Apparently Pork has gone up in price, 4 times in the last 4 months. So, a raise from the RM8 per bowl, to RM9 is actually considered being KIND to its patrons!

DSC09305
Because we over-eat (as usual), we decided to go check out the biscuit shop next door that is Sin Hup Heng food trading co.
DSC09290
What are they making??

DSC09293
Every body is hard at work... Why do they need so many staff?

DSC09329
Oh... then it dawned on me..

The ladies are mass producing the Moon cake!

What a cool process... from kneading the dough to rolling them into balls, to the final product...
DSC09332
VIOLA! Cute huh?

DSC09334
Here is the starting material all spread out over the tables.
.
.

After buying our mooncakes, we were still full.. so we decided to walk some more and to check out Klang Parade.

DSC09338
Wow... this place is really cool. We just realised that we haven't been to Klang Parade... like, ever!

Looking at the neon, we knew that Klang people know how to shop and have a good time;D

DSC09345
Even the sales girls in the boutiques looked like they were ready to hit the party, immediately after work... Short skirts and stilettos were the average uniform here.

DSC09341

2 hours later, the food had settled and the man said.. let's go. I had shopped Klang Parade dry (? teehee) and eaten my fill. And so I was happy.

We left, but one day we will be back to explore the other hidden gems in Klang, for sure:D
