Yap Hup Kee

Our friends were visiting from Melbourne, en route Bali.

We just had to take them for some local food whilst they were in town.

YTF pudu
Yap Hup Kee - the famous Yong Tau Foo shop in Pudu.

"What the hell is that black thing.. can you eat that?" says Ger & N.

After some clarification, Ger decides to take the plunge and heaps the 'black stuff' onto his plate.

As it turns out, the black stuff is deep fried intestine, and both our visitors polished the plate clean, declaring it was delicious.

Also the chee cheong fun with dried shrimp in sweet sauce was a hit.

Being originally from Japan, N declared that the texture of the noodles was good and up to expectation! Phew..

What we like best about Hup Kee is the variety of Yong Tau Foo they have - I mean, these people will stuff anything they can get their hands on, from ladies fingers to four angle beans and long beans. How on earth do u stuff a long bean right? Well, these people do it really well - fold it into a star and stuff the middle.

And if green veges are too healthy for you, then go for the deep-fried black intestine.
Something for everybody!

Golden Tin fries Golden Eggs

DSC01526 DSC01534DSC01530 DSC01538

We stumbled upon a place where one can get rather good Yong Tau Foo, in the Pandan Indah area of town. Golden Tin is not a new coffee-shop, but it is new to us because if we head out to that part of town, it's normally Thai food that we are looking for. At Rmo.80 per piece of YTF, the portions are big, and the vegetables are crisp and the deep fried items just crumble, crunch and flake in your mouth. The novelty here is hard-boiled golden eggs stuffed with YTF stuffings... nice!

The Chee Cheong Fun (flat white noodle) with curry sauce however is pretty average, so our advice is to save your stomach for just the Yong tau foo.. don't bother with the noodles.

The Chili sauce that comes with the YTF goes well with the food and is sweeter than you average Chili sauce, so you don't need the Teem Cheong (sweet sauce) at all. If you are not careful, you can end up guzzling this tasty sauce. The YTF seller probably knows this and so they have a strange sign that says they charge for every extra bowl of chili/ketchup that you ask for;)

Clever man.

The Hau Kee Empire

DSC07871
They eat with Aluminium chopsticks! How clean.. how hygienic...

DSC07881

Not only that, their Yong Tau Foo serves TAUHU SUMBAT (Stuffed taufo) as well as Quails eggs!

Quails eggs are my fav. What luck;)

DSC07884
I am talking about San Yulik. Old but good. This tiny, unassuming looking but clean coffee shop in Cheras is one of my favourites haunts for the YTF.

DSC07873
The curry sauce has kick! We find the sweet sauce too "beany" and salty. But the curry taste more like a Thai Laksa curry, and it is tres, tres YUM :)

DSC07875
This is the YTF with the sweet sauce.
DSC07880
Also, the super sweet and starchy "Pak Kor Yee Mai" (barley with ginko).

DSC07879
Our initial plan was to eat at the Char Siew (BBQ pork) place up the road (Meng Shiang) but at 1pm, all the Char siew habis.... So, being the greedy pigs that we are, we ordered the Char Siew from the Next door neighbour, which was a chicken rice shop.

Only RM3 for a plate (for 1 person)! Now a days, what with hawkers hiking up their prices, THIS is considered cheap. Eventhough the Charsiew was only so-so... where can you find a plate of Char siew for 3 bucks in KL? Summore damn a lot.

DSC07885
Not only that, San Yulik is also incredibally affordable by KL standards.

55 cents per piece of YTF. A steal.

DSC07889
Because we are gluttons (not unlike team BSG... thanks boys!) and still hungry :P, we walk across the street looking for more goodies.

DSC07886
Hurray! More food! We tapau some "Ham Chim Peng" (chinese doughnut with sesame/red bean/glutinous rice centre) ... some "Yau Char Kwai"(chinese doughnut that look like Siamese-twin, bread STICKS)...
DSC07888
And some huge-ass 'cucuk udang' (fried prawn fritters/cake)... bigger than my face!

DSC07891
On our way home, we pass the Hau Kee "EMPIRE"... Hau Kee 1, Hau Kee 2, Hau Kee 3 and Hau Kee 4.

How grand!

I love Cheras.. i do:)
