Guest people

DSC08044
The Hakka are the Han people who moved from North China to the hills and mountains of the South over a long historic period from the Qin (221-206 BC) to the Song (960-1279) dynasties. They are not an ethnic minority either.

DSC08042
Self-identified as Hakka, or guest people, these Han immigrants have retained much of their ancestors' lifestyle and culture. Further, these people have absorbed the best of the cultures of other ethnic groups. This tradition is reflected in Hakka food, which emphasizes original flavours and nutritional value rather than a brilliant appearance. It lures customers with its solid material.

Hakka Rang at Kota Damansara has varied choices on the menu and luscious flavour have brought many patrons, from around the PJ, Tropicana, Kota Damansara area, back for more during lunchtime. Over the past months, we have been here a few times ourselves and the place is always packed. The prices are affordable.

DSC08053
Everytime I am here, the Hakka styled pork with black fungus is a must! Matching the fantastic aroma, the pork here is 'melt in your mouth' succulent and rich in flavour. RM13.80 for a hearty dish, made with tender loving care - not bad!

DSC08049
Several Hakka style soups stewed for hours with Chinese herbs are supposed to have different health benefits and taste good as well! We tried the raddish soup- it was goooood.. not only that.. it was on the house!
DSC08055
Now this dish i LOVED. This is the stir fried bitter gourd with salted egg. At RM10.80, this has a robust and rich egg taste, but a subtle bitterness to it. The salted egg, counter-acting the bitter in the gourd was just an amazing compliment.
DSC08058
The crispy pork with fermented bean curd noodle cost RM6.50 and was of a decent size for the money.

DSC08063
Hakka people are good at making tofu dishes, since tofu for quite a long time was the main source of their protein. At Hakka Rang, they have this signature Tofu dish which has water-chestnuts in it besides fish. This makes the dish thoroughly crunchy and tasty.
You have to ask for this, as it is not on the menu.

Nasi Kandar Kayu Kota Damansara

WELCOME TO NASI KANDAR KAYU!!!

Don't the staff look GRAND??? ....

Nasi Kandar Kayu managing director Sirajudin Y. Mohd Maidin is a TRUE trendsetter!

He was the pioneer in setting up a large, modernised, ultra-bright nasi kandar outlet with outdoor dining in Bukit Jambul, Penang, in 2000.

Apparently Mr. Sarajudin's father, started his nasi kandar business on Penang island in the 1950s, as a roadside stall in Macalister Road. The 1st Nasi Kandar restaurant was birth in 1974, and soon after they moved to Petaling Jaya (lucky us :D)

To date, he has realised yet another dream of his, to take the franchise abroad. Nasi Kandar Kayu Melbourne opened about 2 years ago! How cool is that ?!

Anyway, here is the NEW outlet in Kota Damansara... it really blows your mind how this restaurant franchise has up-ed the stakes in the business...

And as if gorgeous, ultra-bright, ultra-clean, airy working conditions are not enough....

The "executive suite" UPSTAIRS is amazing.... gilded staircases and marble lifts are just the tip of the iceberg...

A MASSIVE CHANDELIER hangs above the private room at Kayu Nasi Kandar!
Erm.. not one .. not two... but SIX(!)plasma TVs offer non-stop entertainment whilst you eat... There is even an exclusive KAYU CHANNEL which tells you what's on the menu for the day! It's pretty darn impressive if you ask me...

Service is great. They wheel up your order on a cute lil cart... and we get down to the business of stuffing our faces!

Good food. Pretty satiated.

All in all, our meal for 4, cost us RM72. Approximately RM18 per head... not cheap.. but certainly not bad, considering it's 5-star nasi kandar we are paying for.. you think? ;)

Home-made Fish Head Noodles

This place is so GREEN! You cannot miss it.

Fish head noodles is the LEAST of my fav things to eat.. because it is just so much bloody effort... Every encounter has me concentrating so hard on not choking, that I leave feeling exhausted and totally stressed out. I mean why can't they just take all the bones out of the fish.. or better yet .. use BONELESS fish? Makes sense right? (incidentally the best place for boneless fish head noodle which is tres tres yum is in KK, Sabah.. it use to be called the BUKIT PADANG one.. then moved to Beverly.. it's amazing... go try... )

Hmmmm... anyway, the bowl looks...

... HARMLESS enough.., right?

.....

.....

.....

NOT ! .... See the bones ?!!

Actually if not for the bones, the Fish head noodles was decent. The soup was thick and sweet. The chili/belacan sauce was spicy and pungent...
However, there was not enough "ham-choy" in the soup to give it that extra kick.

All for a resounding RM7.50 per bowl. My colleagues reckon it's a pretty big bowl, so.. value for money. If you like fish head noodles and 'wrestling' with your meal is 'your thing', then this is the place for you.. haha :P

Batu Road Pan Mee comes to Kota Damansara

Oh boy...
I am not JUST happy...

I am deliriously OVER THE MOON.. yes i am!

TODAY, when me and my colleagues went for lunch near our office, in Kota Damansara.. we saw this NEW sign.
Do you know what this means? It means that my favourite Pan Mee stall of all time has come to PJ!!!! Yes it HAS! I don't need to traverse HELL'S JAM to get to the Batu Road Pan Mee shop anymore...

OOoo... joy... bliss!

By the obvious looks of things, this Pan Mee family business has taken things to the next level. Yup!

Well.. good for them I say..! We couldn't help but notice the really cute T-shirts the staff were wearing as well... "Erm.... yah... " ,

Actually... the T-shirt was not bad...

BUT ... it was the fashion-show that knocked our socks off. It really did.

The Batu Road Pan Mee is legendary for their LOOOOOOOONG, long wait. The food takes forever.
Here, it came like in 5 minutes !!!
My colleagues were thrilled....

So... what's all the FUSS about... ? Well.. here it is .... TA-DAH!

Gorgeous, gorgeous... bootylicious pan mee... hahahaha!

OK, ok.. let me walk you through it....

STEP 1
Stare at your bowl of Pan mee and go .... OOOOooooooooooo... !

STEP 2
Break up the Egg and simultaneously add the chili paste whilst mixing consistently...

(this is the same chili paste, by the way, as in the Batu Road outlet.. it knocks your socks off... and I am saying this as the QUEEN OF CHILI and ALL THINGS HOT.. so you've been warned!)

STEP 3
TOSS WELL, toss repeatedly, in a semi-coma like state... until you reach NIRVANA... (kidding.. kidding... Just toss it till it looks even in colour and the egg yolk is evenly distributed)

STEP 4
Eat it of course ... LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW... ! lol :P

Don't forget the soup that goes with it!

So...

VERDICT???
Well.. my colleague felt that the noodle at this place was not as SPRINGY as the one at the Batu Road outlet. He also felt that the portions served here were smaller... and just a TAD less yummie.

However... ME on the other hand.... I LOVED IT!
No complaints !

Just go and try it la... you'll see :P
