E. Guigal Chateau d Ampuis - An exclusive wine dinner at Opus

DSC01579

The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Côte-Rôtie. In these vineyards of over 2400 years old you can still see the small terraced walls characteristic of the Roman period. Etienne Guigal arrived in this region in 1923 at the age of 14. He made wine over 67 vintages and, at the beginning of his career, participated in the development of the Vidal-Fleury establishment.

Despite his young age, Marcel Guigal took over from his father in 1961 and his hard work and perseverance enabled the Guigals to buy out Vidal-Fleury in 1984, although the establishment retains its own identity and commercial autonomy. In 2000, the Guigals purchased the Jean-Louis GRIPPAT estate in Saint-Joseph and Hermitage as well as the Domaine de VALLOUIT in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage.

Anyway, on the 3rd of September, I got a call from FBB, who got a call from one Mr. Peter Yew, manager of the Opus, Cava, Moxie & Leonardo chain, inviting us to partake in an exclusive wine dinner by E Guigal Chateau d Ampuis, at Opus. FBB, Craving Joe, Superwilson and moi made up a table of four.

IMG_2900-2

The wines that we had the pleasure of getting acquainted with, that fine evening, were as follows:
1. Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2007
2. Condrieu 2007
3. Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2006
4. Crozes Hermitage Rouge 2005

DSC01581

This wonderful wine pairing dinner experience priced at RM188nett per person was elegant and full of finesse, from the way the restaurant was decorated, to the way the menu was meticulously constructed around each wine.

Opus2

I think what I love best about these wonderful dinners is the fact that there are wines before (pre), during as well as after the dinner. That is what I call 'living the life'.

During the Pre-dinner we had the first sip, of wine number one, the E Guigal Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2007. This wine was light-hearted and crisp. If I could describe it as one of the four seasons, it would represent Spring. Flowery, fruity and with a promise of blossom. Some may have found this wine a tad too subtle and lacking in body, but I liked it.

After a quick introduction on the wines by the enigmatic Rod Hull, Asia Pacific representative of E Guigal, we pretty much got down to dinner.

DSC01604

First up was the Salad - Wild mushroom forest with black truffle oil. This run-of-the-mill salad which would otherwise have been slightly boring, actually took on a whole new dimension, as the musky smell of the truffle oil permeated its ferns and gave it a life of its own. Superb. This salad found its pair in a smooth white wine, with a fleshy richness and this was none other than the E Guigal Condrieu 2007.

Opus1

The lobster cappuccino was served in a cappuccino cup, not unlike, a cup of cappuccino... so much so that superwilson was having trouble accepting the fact that he had to drink it with a tea-spoon.

"It looks like coffee, for crying out loud.. just drink it like coffee, man.. "

Sure wilson.. whatever you say. Anyway, this worked well for most of us, and once again the lobster soup was paired with the E Guigal Condrieu 2007.

Enter the Primi. I Wiki-ed this term and found out that Primi means the first course. So here is the first course, before the main course. And if this is the first course before the main course, then what were the courses before that? the pre, pre courses? I really could get the hang of this .. pre, post .. whatever, it's all good. Just make sure you pair it with the right wine. (Yes, as you can tell, I'm a fast learner.)

So, here is my Primi of Spaghetti with King Prawn & Anchovies. I breathed a sigh of relief that I could not actually taste the anchovies per se, because that would have totally destroyed, what would otherwise have been a perfectly fine dish, for me.

So, good! No anchovy aftertaste.
Both the pasta and the king prawn resisted the tooth and were well seasoned, and when paired with a full-bodied, slightly tannic yet balanced red, the effect was mellow and did not leave you felling too full after that somewhat heavier pasta course.
This balanced red was none other than the E Guigal Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2006.

Opus3

For the main course, we had a choice of either the Rosemary Lamb Cutlet with port wine reduction lamb jus or the Tarragon Fillet Mignon with cabernet jus and both would be paired with the E Guigal Crozes Hermitage Rouge 2005.

I went with the Rosemary Lamb Cutlet and was not disappointed. My lamb when cut, had a rosy pink center which bled juices infused with the aroma of rosemary.. a sure sign that the Chef knows what Medium-rare means. Exquisite.

The wine chosen for this course was the E Guigal Crozes Hermitage Rouge 2005. I immediately took to the smokiness of this red. I was told that the best way to describe this wine is that it possesses aromas of grilled meats, smoked herbs, red as well as black fruits, and a soft, open-knit, smoky character. Well, no wonder it went so well with my red meat.

Opus
We had Tiramisu for dessert and from the smiling faces, you can probably guess for yourselves, that the wine pairing dinner went on without a glitch and that the night ended on a high note. Thanks once again to FBB and Peter of Opus for the invite!

What Other Cuisine.. ?

Of all the food in the world (after Malaysian cuizine), I love Italian food the most. Try speaking the word 'strangugghia previti' and see if you don't break out in a smile, or try saying the 'rhum ba ba' out loud and see if you don't fell like breaking out in dance!
Italian cuisine is melodic and lyrical, and it comes across as a tune almost everyone can sing. What other cuisines can come close?

Nero Fico

DSC09925
There was a massive jam leading all the way into Hartamas, so we decided to do a slight detour and ended up in Damansara Heights instead.

Nero Fico on Jalan Dungun.. we wanted to check this restaurant out, since we had not been here from the time it opened. (We recently tried Al Padrino across the road and that was pretty decent).

DSC09935
First up, the Fried Quail's eggs and Asparagus Salad. I personally prefer my quail's eggs boiled.. what a waste of a cute lil round egg right, frying it?
Having said that, the salad was delicious. We ate it up in 5 seconds flat.

DSC09939
Mushroom Salad which was not on the menu but which the chef whipped up (easy enough), since one amongst us was a big fan of the mushroom.
This was good too.

DSC09941
The Kobe Beef stole the show. I dare say this was one of the better ones in KL and the marbling was superb. It tasted like one, I had the good fortune of trying in Kobe, once upon a time. That was a grade 9 wagyu.

DSC09967
I wanted to order mine BLUE (again.. just for the sake of shouting Blue! haha..) but stopped short and went for rare instead.

DSC09949
The Veal was tasty but a tad salty. Must have been the cheese.

DSC09950
The Tortelli Mushroom with a nice slab of foie gras on top, was cooked to perfection - the pasta shell resisted the tooth and biting into it sent spurts of mushroom core gushing into one's mouth. What an amazing sensation!

DSC09954
Pizza Quattro Stagioni is like having FOUR pizzas and eating them too!

This was meaty and what I would call a real MAN'S pizza, but could have done with more tomato base and cheese. The artichokes were delicious. I personally am a big fan of the 'choke'. Did you know that Artichoke is the primary flavor of the Italian liqueur Cynar? Well, now you know..!

Finally the tiramisu and Grappa on the house. What a nice touch to be served the throat-searing grappa as a parting gift to the diner. Already tipsy from a couple of bottles of wine, a shot of this fragrant, grape-based, pomace brandy of Italian origin, nearly had us spouting Italian to all the customers!

(We do not speak Italian.)

All in all, we had an enjoyable dining experience.

Delucca and the Rum Baba..

DSC09912
I left my heart at Delucca..!

(And my chocolate martini.. sigh..)

Recently Updated5
The new Chef, the new smile.. most importantly... the menu now tastes great!

He has only been here 4 days, but I am glad that Chef Nicola Carradori who hails from Tuscany, is now heading the kitchen. Prior to this, he was based in China.

New Folder1
Where is this place Delucca?
It's where the old meets the new.. on Changkat Bukit Bintang.
I love the modern and old architecture of buildings you can find along the same row.

DSC09866
I also love a good apple martini.
The ones at Delucca are divine.

DSC09869
The Whisky Sour. Potent yet zesty. A real pick me up on a hot sunny afternoon.

DSC09880
The Zuppa Giorno which turned out to be a delicious soup of the day. Clams and cream of Carrot/ginger! A fantastic blend.

DSC09882
The Seared Tuna Salad. Light and refreshing but I would have preferred a more raw center to the tuna.

DSC09884
Insalata Funghi. Crispy and wholesome, the pine nuts added a nice touch.

DSC09890
This was the Soufflé Gamberoni - a prawn soufflé with a carrot cream sauce to boot. Far out. The soufflé was light and fluffy without ending up overbaked and rubbery (as you find in so many places.. ) This was my favourite of the day.

DSC09895
No, no.. wait a minute.. THAT was not my favourite of the day.
THIS tortelloni, which was not on the menu, but which Chef Nicola himself whipped up for us, was my favourite of the day.

OMG! I just died and went to pasta paradise.
The tortelloni was stuffed with pumpkin in saffron and mascarpone sauce. Just take a bite and wait for the springy tortelloni shell to give way, to a sweet-savoury pumpkin centre infused with saffron and other magnificent herbs..

What? How come no one ever cooked this for me before:P

DSC09905
Mousse, on the house but not, in your hair.

DSC09903
And my favourite, cutesy dessert.. the Rum Baba! Even the name is so cute.. kinda makes you wanna do a jiggle to it..

A rum baba or baba au rhum is a small yeast cake saturated in liquor, usually rum, and sometimes filled with whipped cream or pastry cream. The batter for baba is even richer than that for brioche, and includes eggs, milk, and butter. No wonder it taste so sinfully good!

Richer is always better!

Il Padrino

Recently Updated1
Il Padrino at UOA - we read about this place on Eat Drink KL. We decided to pay the 'Godfather' a visit.

DSC08795
Antipasto misto "il padrino" - RM78.00
This starter for two of bresaola, tomato buffalo mozzarella, calamari, parma ham with melon and grilled vegetables was served relatively quickly. It was light and refreshing with an intensely fragrant slice of melon that tempered the salty parma ham to perfection.

DSC08809

DSC08815

We had to wait a long time for our bread though. The bread-sticks were soft and no longer fresh unfortunately. We liked the crispy paper thin bread bits.

DSC08829
Fettucchine nero alla granchio - RM32.00
The homemade squid ink fettuccine served with carb meat sauce was rather disappointing. Whilst the crab sauce was sweet and fresh with the metallic after notes of zinc, the pasta fell flat on its face. Soft, over-cooked and really rather bland. We expected more from the homemade pasta.

DSC08823
Ravioli al spinaci - RM32.00
The spinach and ricotta cheese ravioli served with butter sage sauce and parmesan cheese was slightly better than the squid ink fettuccine. It in terms of texture, it resisted the tooth a bit more than the fettuccine but could have still been slightly more al dente.

DSC08844
The spinach center of the ravioli was gorgeous and creamy. We loved the taste of the parmesan cheese that gave the dish a rich and heavy finish. We needed this as they served so few pieces of ravioli! The portion was really rather small.

DSC08859
Roast Pork Belly - RM42.00
The Roast Pork Belly which was the special that day was a letdown. Tough and hard with too much reduced balsamic vinegar sauce, it was actually a case of too many over-powering flavours with no clear aroma coming through.

Well, the next time we go back we will try the pizza as recommended by Masak Masak!
