A powerful place to be!

On my recent trip to Brunei, I nearly had a heart attack.

Yikes! Good thing that nice gentleman of an officer pointed it out to me - just under 6 months on my passport. Spotted just in time too.. in a couple of months I'll be travelling again!

DSC08492
Is this some new hobby ?

Empty-field-gazing.

DSC08493
No.. this is what you do (if you are clever) in the 2 hours they give you to come back for your passport.. Anyone who has to renew their passport at Terminal 2 (you will see the immigration sign just before terminal 3), Lapangan Terbang Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SAAS), Kampung Baru Subang, knows that there is nothing much to do, during the waiting time between submission of forms and collection of the renewed passport.

Not fun.

DSC08494
Too lazy to drive home to PJ, we decided to explore ye old subang airport area..

DSC08495
Wow.. boy were we glad we did!

DSC08463
What luck! We chanced upon the morning market...

DSC08468
We noticed that eventhoungh this area looked rural and kampung-ish and all... the people were pretty comfortable, in that each family seemed to own a minimum of 2 cars! This one we spotted own 3! Plus a makeshift garage as well.. how cool.

DSC08465
DSC08469DSC08470
Anyway , introducing Kampung Baru Subang! Nice place to kill 2 hours!

And restoran KFD.. as in KFC's brother. lol.

DSC08473
What can we say... though the place was packed.. the duck and siew-yok was so so.
DSC08475
The charsiew did not hit the spot either...
The entire portion for two, costs us RM8.

DSC08484
We decided to explore the area some more....

A Burmese restaurant! Oh darn..we should have eaten here instead. The place looks clean and the aroma of something sweet, on the boil, is intoxicating.. we spoke to the nice, friendly owner and he told us that there is a huge Burmese population in Kampung Baru Subang..

Next time, we may come back to sample his cuizine!

DSC08485

Everywhere you turn, there is lush, gorgeous, fresh produce.

DSC08487
Eggs, straight from the farm. Introducing.. the WET MARKET.

The term wet market alludes to poor lighting, poor air circulation, floors that are always wet and slippery. Add the smell of fresh fish, herbs, freshcut poultry, and vegetables and viola.. you have a stinky, pulsating environment that any prissy city gal would steer clear of.
erm.. but not this one.. The Kampung Baru Subang market is airy and open.
It doesn't smell at all.

The wet market is a powerful place to be!

DSC08488
The aunty is yelling at me in an indecipherable language, and pointing at the weird sea creatures, scallops, mussels, squid, cuttlefish and fish heads.. the uncle is putting on a show for me and gesticulating wildly at me in cantonese " SHOT ME! SHOT ME!" .

What an exhibitionist.

A born performer. Madman. He cracked me up.

DSC08489
Obviously, no one speaks English here, so I had to communicate with my pathetic, broken cantonese and my girly charms.. harhar. When it came to telling me the price, they typed in the numbers on their calculator .. thinking I couldn't count in cantonese. What la these people... so action one.

I mean.. what do i look like..? a tourist? Pfft.

DSC08491
Uncle.. posing again. This man kills me. Honest.

DSC08497
A supermarket named HERO.

DSC08498
This is the JERING.

This next section is written in MALAY. Our indigenous language. Read on for the interpretation.

DSC08501

In other words, Jering is of the genus species Pithecellobium jiringa, of the family Leguninosae. This gorgeous little fruit is used in the treatment of GOUT. It is normally pounded then boiled. All the parts can be used for medicinal, healing properties.

The extract is good for gout, the skin is good for treating diabetes.

DSC08502
Needless to say, i bought a whole bundle. (The amount of meat we eat, we should be prepared for gout.. you think?!)

DSC08504
Some other interesting paraphernalia we saw, walking back to the car...

"Essentials for Robbing a bank in 5 minutes!" ;P

DSC08511
Pushing 2 hours. Almost time to go back to SAAS for my passport.
But not before a quick pit stop ... still dissatisfied with the duck.. we just had to try something else to placate our stomachs.

Man in the Stall! We want!

DSC08513
The stall is situated on the corner, at the top of the street where the morning market starts (there's no other way to describe it as there is no sign).

The wantan mee was pretty good. For RM3.50 .. it was affordable and tasted fresh and juicy. The noodles were done just the way we like it!

Well, well, 2 hours wait for the passport was not such a bad thing after all.

If you are in the area, we strongly recommend you check Kampung Baru Subang out :)

Watch out .. DUCK!

We saw JAYA ONE for the 1st time (up close and personal) .. and we LOVE it! I mean, this place is uber trendy and cool and full of promise... Lets hope that the management doesn't screw it up... ahem! So far .. it looks like it's bursting with potential... !

Slide1

So.. we were walking around.. soaking up the vibe... wondering where to eat...

...

...

It was the SIGN that caught us by surprise...

...

...

...

So cute! so ingenious...! So chinese-y yet NOT! We just had to check it out for ourselves...

DSC05004

DUCKING!

We couldn't wait to sample the food...

DSC05005

such a modern, swanky place... all air-conditioned and high-tech and luxurious and all... so much better than your average coffee shop duck rice place.. surely the FOOD had to be GOOD... rite?!

well.. the proof of the pudding is in the eating... so.. less talk.. lets EAT.

DSC05012

Being suckers for good food and all things LARD worthy, we decided to cut to the chase, and order the restaurant's Pièce de résistance.. the duck.

All kinds.

Every kind.

Ooo yea.. we were on a roll...

Starting at 1 o'clock... The Teow-Chew Braised, The Regular Roasted and , last but not least..., The Nanjing Salted...

DSC05014DSC05013DSC05015

all this gorgeous duck would not be complete without the signature wantan mee noodle...

so.. THAT, we ordered, too.

DSC05011

So "how was the food?" you say?

erm... well...

10 minutes into the eating...

my colleagues look at me and say... "so pretty.. so nice looking.. but no taste la..."

That about sums it up. All show, no go.

The braised duck at PJ STATE is so much better. The roast duck at Sunrise Sea Park is soooooooooo much more tasty.

Which just goes to show.. don't judge a book by its cover.

For me and my colleagues, we will take long queues, sweltering heat and jostling elbows any day, over air-conditioning, luxurious deco and plush seats... if that's what it takes to have a satisfying meal.

That's just the way we are :P

Food :4/10
Price :rm35 for that 3-combination you see in the photo.

SUNRISE.. wake-up... time to EAT !

THAT'S the sound of PAPER THIN, CRISPY DUCK SKIN... leaving a smoke trail.... en route to MOUTH !!!

I love Sunrise, Sea Park PJ! It's my favourite PJ duck place. (Ranks second only to the PUDU duck place (look under duck index)).

This place is ARCHAIC. Nonetheless, this place is still SOOOOOOOOOO popular with the PJ folk.. you would not believe... only 11.45am and already packed to the gills...

Gorgeous, succulent, crispy, MELT IN YOUR MOUTH DUCK. I think the thing i like most about the Sunrise Duck is that the LAYER OF FAT between the MEAT and the SKIN... is virtually...
...NON-EXISTENT! Honest .. they just CUT TO THE CHASE and give you 100% crispy skin! KILLER!
(If you don't believe me, just scroll up and take another look at the pictures! Real or not?)

Most people eat their duck this way.. .with the VEGE.. so they don't leave feeling guilty as SIN that they ate SO MUCH RED MEAT AND ANIMAL FAT in one sitting.. hahaha:D

Me... I don't really care... I am here for my SKIN fix... none of that healthy vege business thanks ... :P

Food : 7/10
Price : RM42 for whole ducky... RM21.50 for half a ducky
Service : pretty fast

FATT KEE grilled chicken rice

The place is called Fatt Kee grilled chicken rice, but believe me, it's the DUCK you want to try! Cumi loves the duck and bbq pork rice, but for me (Ciki), its the pepper pig stomach soup that keeps me coming back... honestly, its sooooo peppery and sweet and yet not "porky-smelly" that it brings tears to my eyes (literally - am not sure if they are tears of joy, or tears caused by the pepper .. haha). For those who like their pig stomach soup with an extra peppery kick, look no further. This is it.Also, when I say that this is the place one dreams about, and wakes up in cold sweat over, only to have the insatiable sensation pacified by legging it down to Fatt Kee and stuffing one's face with the siew ngap(roast duck) siew yok (bbq roast pork) fan (rice), i really mean this is THE place one dreams about.. i kid u not .The duck is tender, juicy and sweet with no gamey smell, and the bbq roast pork is crispy and succulent. Be sure to ask for the portion that is half-fat-half-lean, as this is the best part. Just tell the duck man, "UNCLE, Ngor Yew Poon Fei Sau, Em Koi Sai !!!!" The meal is also rather affordable, unlike the other 'rip-off' duck rice place in Balakong (kindly refer to past blog on duck rice in Balakong) . At Fatt Kee, 2 persons portion of duck and bbq roast pork as well as 1 portion of pepper pig stomach soup, and 2 drinks will come up to a mere RM18.50

What bliss! What joy! What a steal i say...

Since I do not believe in spoon feeding my readers, and that most of the fun of food hunting lies in looking, and getting loss and looking, and getting loss.. etc etc... I will only say that Fatt Kee's is somewhere on Jalan Pudu, near the Pudu shopping centre/supermarket:)

Location : Pudu

Food : 8/10

Ambiance :3/10

Cleanliness :6/10 (aiyo.. roadside coffee shop la.. how to give a higher score? haha)

How we got ripped off in Balakong !

CIKI: This weekend we got ripped off! At the enticing advice of some food blogs we read, we headed out to New Village Taman Indah, Batu 11, Balakong, to try the legendary pan mee and suei kaw. Apparently the food is also MSG free. Well the food is msg free... and taste free as well.. ! NO TASTE! the soup was flat and lousy, had two small pieces of chicken and the suei kaw had hardly any prawn or mince meat in it. As a result, we finished only half our pan mee, paid and left for the duck rice stall we saw down the road (an old converted house).
The duck rice was great! Tasty succulent and really soft tender meat which melted in your mouth.. here is the picture to prove it..

unfortunately this, small plate of duck, for 2 people cost nearly RM 20 and so.. all in all, our lunch (pan mee plus duck) cost us nearly RM 35 for simple coffee shop food.
first and last time we eat pan mee in Balakong.. !
