Service by Wheel-barrow

This morning, my husband had a craving. To satisfy this craving, we had to drive towards Zoo Negara...

We saw a sign that said we were on the right track...

When you spot the MacDonalds, and the Petronas sign...

It means you are really near! There it is!

New Heong Kee..

but good Old fashion Beggar's chicken!

Don't let the bungalow throw you off...

<span class=
Around the back is where all the ACTION is!

<span class=
Some Beggar's Chicken restaurants in Selangor mainly cater to the Dinner crowd.
Luckily New Heong Kee is open for lunch too.

<span class=
Not only can you have chicken, but there's also beggar's duck, beggar's mutton etc... but just make sure you call one day in advance to book your meal (see end of blog for contact number).

<span class=
Apparently during peak hour, this hot bed can cook up to 50 beggar's chicken parcels.

<span class=
Speaking of which, there is ours!

<span class=
The mud with which they wrap the chicken.

<span class=
Service by wheelbarrow! lol.

<span class=
A massive longan tree grows in the backyard...
<span class=
I wonder if longan is for dessert...

<span class=
Here's our lunch, being unwrapped.

<span class=
layer, after layer...

<span class=
Until our chicken emerges!

<span class=
Presenting.. the Beggar's Chicken!

Brown, Glistening and smoking hot...

<span class=
Another signature dish here is the reconstituted fish.. if done well, this dish truly rocks.

<span class=
The skin of the fish is kept intact, while the flesh of the fish is removed, de-boned, ground up with chestnuts and other goodies, and then stuffed back into the fish skin.

The whole reconstituted fish is then re-fried. Our old "ah-mah chay" who use to work for us, use to cook this for us on a regular basis and it use to blow our socks off... It really requires skill, dedication and patient and steady hand!

This one though, tasted like a 5/10 because they ground up the fish flesh too fine and added too much flour, until it tasted like fish ball..

oh well.. at least it brought back fond memories.. ;D

<span class=
This is the inside of our beggar's chicken stuffed full with the Chinese herbs. The chicken flesh was infused with this herbal flavour.

<span class= <span class=

This is a photo of all that was left of our meal. Not bad for just TWO persons, right? ;)

wow, in my youth, about 20 years ago, one had to travel all the way to the arse end of banting, near bukit jugra, to have such goodies. by the time you arrive back in KL you're hungry again.
must be the same people, the genetically modified fish was their signature dish too.
