Al Maghreb and stories of 'slashings'..
This is my mate, Brother B, getting high on Moroccan Tea. He seems right at home seated on the verandah of this laid-back, colourfully tiled restaurant.
This Moroccan restaurant situated on Jalan Damai is famous for its Middle Eastern and Mediterranean eateries. We are talking about none other than Al Maghreb.
Al-Maghreb Restaurant serves authentic Moroccan cuisine featuring a variety of fish and meat tagine/tajine dishes, and couscous, served with vegetables and lamb, a popular dish among the Moroccans. The cuisine of Morocco is a mix of Arab, Berber, Moorish, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, African, and influences.
Harira - RM15.00
We start off with the harira, a traditional lentil soup with bits of Lamb in it. This has a coarse, bean-like texture with a strong sweet after taste of lamb. Those who are susceptible to 'gas'/flatulence, beware!
This is followed by the 'Special Pacha Menu' - RM55.00
If you ask me, this is really value for money because the set can feed two to three persons comfortably. It comes with the Salad, Chicken and Almond Pastilla (which on its own is already RM20.00) the Tajine of Chicken with Olives and Moroccan Pastry (essentially Naan bread) and Moroccan Tea.
Chicken Tajine - Taste of herbs, spices and Olives. It possesses the intense spicy flavourful aroma of northern indian cuizine, minus the rich heavy aftertaste.
This is the Moroccan Pastry which looks and tastes like Naan.
The Chicken Almond Pastilla which reminds me of Murtabak is the highlight of the meal. I love the fact that the outer pastry (phyllo pastry sheets) is deep fried and sprinkled with cinnamon and fine white powdered sugar. Biting into the deep-golden, sweet and crisp layer with bursts of chicken and almond shards, is like biting into pastry paradise.
Did I say I love this dish?! I cannot say it enough times.
Because we are pigs, we also ordered From the Grill - Grilled lamb shoulder and an assortment of Lamb, Chicken, pieces - RM50.00
In keeping with Moroccan tradition, guests were served with traditional green tea with mint, the preferred drink of all Moroccans, in tiny transparent glasses.
We adjourn outside to the colorful verandah.
Moroccan Tea and Turkish Coffee is served.
Brother B and Cumi in action. Ciki pours coffee.
Baklava - RM6.00 for 3 pieces.
Finally, amidst extremely animated stories of extreme 'slashings in Kampung Baru' and music talk and mixing music and latest books we are reading and holiday adventure stories in bangkok, phuket... we unwind and linger and laugh till there are no more tears to cry.. still the pot of tea is full.. we stay till the late afternoon then leave feeling incredibly satisfied with our moroccan lunch.
Brother B demonstrating how exactly, one gets slashed, with a Parang. Why he has that devilish smile on his face, we have no idea.

I love Moroccan food too... but people-wise, let's say that I have more bad experiences compared to the good ones...
ouh there's another good moroccan place at solaris ... a family-run outlet called International Fresh Gourmet (yeah, terrible name). the pastilla there is excellent too...
Wow! Have seen this food in Discovery travel & living... would love to try it! Quite pricey, ya?
Love the look of that lazy interior... what better place to kick back with slasher stories and that intriguing looking pastilla!! Morocco! Oh when will I see thee??!
The place looks really nice and everything looks so delicious! Love moroccon food, so flavourful!
Looks like a cool place to chill an afternoon out, but the weather is killing. Tell me, do they play Arabic music there? And howz the Baklava there? Have already added it to my already mile long list of must go pig out places...
Sigh... so much food, so little time and expanding waistline.
that's hardly like naan. naan is thicker. it's called 'lebanese bread' or 'lavash' :)

The baklava is so-so. They are the same ones you can buy in bulk from the Arabic Food Stores in Ampang (Altzeer Arabic Food Outlet)
